The Puppet Talisman – Ritu Chawla

Ritu’s series “Doors – Memories & Nostalgia” revisits doors and entryways that she has encountered over time—weathered wooden frames, haveli thresholds, bold colours, and patinated entryways. Long-standing symbols of welcome, protection, and passage in India, these doors become canvases of ‘memory and nostalgia’. Each painting gathers lost and fading objects, motifs, and textures from a world slowly slipping out of today’s urban landscape. Rusting letterboxes, sacred tulsi plant, iconic lemon and chilli nazar battu, and ritual markings appear as fragments of lived life. Together, they function as quiet time capsules, carrying memories that feel universally familiar yet deeply personal. The series invites viewers to pause at these thresholds—not as divisions, but as spaces of continuity where stories linger long after the door has closed.

About Ritu Chawla

Ritu Chawla is a Bangalore-based hospitality professional who pursues art as a deeply personal practice of expression and restoration. Self-taught, her artistic journey began in childhood and was more recently shaped through mentorship under acclaimed artist MG Doddamani. Encouraged by her family, she returned to art after decades in hotel operations and entrepreneurship. Rooted in storytelling and concepts, she works in a semi-abstract visual language. An aesthete at heart, her work evolves from close observation, nostalgia, and draws from a sensibility aligned with the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, where she embraces imperfection, weathering, and time as integral to beauty she portrays on canvas. Doors and entryways recur as central themes in her practice, serving as portals to memory, identity, and cultural continuity.
