Basuki Dasgupta

Acrylic on Canvas

24" x 24"

Basuki Dasgupta transforms the forces and elements of nature like ocean waves, the sun and the plains of West Bengal into geometric shapes and intricate patterns inspired by the terracotta temples of Bishnupur (where the artist grew up). The earthy sensations and roughhewn textures found in the natural world and the temples of his childhood are replicated in his abstract, tactile murals. Immersed in this non-figurative universe are stylized, puppet-like tigers and trees which take their cues from Pat Chitra, an age-old folk art from Bengal. The blending and splitting of figures and patterns signify the interconnectedness of life and the coming together of various polarities – nature and humans, rustic and urban, earthly and divine.
