How to select an artwork

Selecting a good artwork, whether for personal enjoyment, investment, or a collection, involves considering several factors.

01.
Personal Connection

Does the artwork evoke a strong emotion or reaction in you? A piece that resonates with you personally is always a good choice. Consider whether the artwork aligns with your personal aesthetic or the theme of your collection.

02.
Artistic Quality

Look at the balance, harmony, and arrangement of elements within the piece. Examine the artist’s use of materials, brushwork, or craftsmanship. Consider whether the piece offers a fresh perspective or unique approach.

03.
Artist’s Reputation

Research the artist’s background, education, and experience. Well-established or emerging artists are often safer bets. Also check the artist’s market performance. Have their works increased in value over time?

04.
Seek Expert Advice

Ensure the artwork comes with proper documentation, including certificates of authenticity. Art advisors, gallery owners, or collectors can provide valuable insights and help you make informed decisions.

FEATURED ARTIST

SUHAS ROY

Suhas Roy was a versatile painter who was born in Bangladesh. He studied painting at the Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship, Calcutta, followed by graphic arts at the Atelier 17 Ecole Superior Des Beaux Arts, Paris. He taught painting at Kala Bhavan and worked as the head of the Department of Painting at Santiniketan. Roy’s works are fixated with the female face and form, and his characters are romanticised, dwelling the dreamlike world between sensuality and honesty. His work is usually inspired by life around him, but his themes are as much influenced by the everyday world as they are rooted in fantasy.
